Choosing Blinds for a Bay Window
Bay Windows
Bay Windows offer a more complicated challenge to fitting Blinds. We have put together all of the advice you need to know and below our the Blinds we would recommend.
As Bays are generally at the front of the house, then main requirement is generally that they can easily be adjusted to control light, rather than being either up or down.
They should be thought of as a number of individual blinds that butt up to each other, whilst not quite touching in operation.
The key to getting a good fit is correct measuring. So to assist with this we have put together detailed instructions on How To Measure Bay Windows in our How To section.
It is a step by step photo tutorial to show you exactly how to measure and is also downloadable. You can print off a PDF version to refer to whilst measuring.
Wooden Venetians
Wooden Venetian Blinds are by far the most popular choice to put in Bay Windows. They can be adjusted to a 45 degree angle to allow natural light into the room, whilst making it difficult for passers by to see into the room.
The same virtues for Privacy also make them ideas for security, as even when fully closed if you leave a light on a timer it can make burglars believe someone is home.
Generally the larger slat sizes, such as 50mm, are the best as they allow a better control between Light and Privacy. The light has the ability to bounce through the slats on light colours whist obscuring the view
We have several Ranges of Wooden Venetians that are ideal in a range of slat sizes and colours with over 130 variations.
Taped versions are also available which can act as a great feature with contrasting colours or complimentary if you just want clean lines.
Tapes also cover the holes in the slats so add to the Privacy and Blackout qualities.
Aluminium Venetians
As Aluminium Venetians Blinds have similar traits to Wooden Venetians, they also make a good choice.
The advantage is that if you wish to raise the Blinds on a regular basis the stack of the blinds is much smaller leaving more of the glass clear.
Aluminium Venetians are much lighter, particularly if one of the blinds is quite large, so can be easier to operate.
The slats are painted and so a wider colour choice is available if you wish to match another feature in the room.
Faux Wood Venetians
If the Bay is subject to moisture or condensation then a Faux wood should be considered. As the slats are impervious to water, but be careful to bear in mind, that they are generally heavier than Traditional Wooden Venetians. This can make them difficult to operate in the larger sizes.
